Our Various Stages Festival of new boundary-defying opera and music theatre, featuring a range of projects. Completing the programme is a new work by composer Gavin Bryars based on author Michael Ondaatje’s The Collected Works of Billy the Kid.
The Collected Works of Billy the Kid is one half of two-part music theatre project Calamity/Billy, which also examines the letters of Calamity Jane. The double portrait turns traditional portrayals of these figures on their heads and presents an intimate, private view. At the same time it explores the line between fact and fiction, so relevant in a time of post-truth and fake news. The project is being led by the Lyon-based Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse and director Jean Larcornerie.
Calamity/Billy joins a diverse range of projects that include influences from across the globe, from Vietnamese water puppetry, to magical realism and the tale of infamous New York hoarders.
We’re also excited that contemporary music specialists The Riot Ensemble will be joining us a resemble ensemble for the festival. They will be working with each of the projects to help artists explore ideas and bring their work into reality.
Catch work-in-progress presentations of all six Various Stages projects as part of the festival day on Friday 24 February. Tickets are now on sale.
