Folie à deux to open Operadagen Rotterdam 2016
As details of Rotterdam’s Operadagen festival are released, we’re excited to share that our production Folie à Deux is being included in the opening night’s festivities.
Folie à Deux will be presented on Friday 20 May as part of a collection of new work in Rotterdam’s Schouwburg celebrating the first night of this year’s festival. Alongside are work from across Europe and beyond exploring collective and personal experience.
Written by composer Emily Hall and Icelandic author Sjón, Folie à Deux is an intimate window into an electric world of shared madness. Through interconnected songs, we follow the story of a woman who desperately wants to connect with her lover, his growing delusions about the influence of a nearby pylon having created a gulf of loneliness between them. The piece features Swedish jazz artists, Sofia Jernberg, with the vocals accompanied by traditional lever harp and the specially-created electromagnetic harp as the sinister presence of the pylon.
Operadagen Rotterdam brings together the best of contemporary music theatre from across the globe in an annual ten-day festival, exploring the limits of opera and music theatre in today's society. In 2016, its 11th edition explores the theme ‘(R)evolution’. Full programme details are now available.
