Gwyneth Herbert

Composer/Libretto

 Gwyneth Herbert is an award winning composer, lyricist, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist and passionate workshop facilitator. Theatre credits as composer/lyricist include The Snow Queen (Bristol Old Vic) for which she also voiced the title role, The A-Z of Mrs P (book by Diane Samuels, Southwark Playhouse; song Lovely London Town winner of the Stiles and Drewe Award); Le Tabou (with Kath Burlinson, Youth Music Theatre, Plymouth Barbican); and adaptations of Terence Rattigan’s After Lydia and Peter Barnes’ Before the Law (Sidney Brown Memorial Award Special Commendation), both with bookwriter Christine Denniston.

Other composition work includes her film score for 1928’s The Patsy (BFI Bird’s Eye View Film Festival 2010); works for the London Sinfonietta; two musical/film/art installations pieces with artist Mel Brimfield: The Palace That Joan Built, (Art on the Underground and Theatre Royal Stratford East) and Springtime for Henry (and Barbara) (Jerwood Foundation); and Baiskeli yangu, ehh (2014), her arrangement of a Swahili folk song simultaneously performed by 100,000 children worldwide (Aldeburgh Music).

Also an established recording and performing artist, Gwyneth has released six critically acclaimed albums and toured extensively across the UK and worldwide.

As well as forthcoming live and recording project Letters I Haven’t Written - an audio / visual work in collaboration with video projection artist Will Duke, projects in development include The Rhythm Method – a piece of music theatre about contraception (with Diane Samuels, supported by the Wellcome Foundation) and a theatrical development of her Joan Littlewood project (with Mel Brimfield).
