Director Brian Mertes’s body of work spans theatre, television and ﬁlm.
His production of Jedermann, co-created with Julian Crouch, premiered at the Salzburg Festival in 2013 and will be remounted each summer until 2019. He has directed numerous new plays, including David Greenspan’s The Myopia (The Foundry Theatre) and Jose Rivera’s Massacre at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater in New York, and has developed new work at venues ranging from the Public Theater (New York) to Soho Rep (New York) to Actors Theater of Louisville. He has directed frequently at Juilliard, where he created a multimedia music-theatre work based on Sam Shepard’s Paris, Texas in collaboration with Stephanie Fleischmann.
Mertes is the Head of the MFA directing programme at Brown University/Trinity Rep and an Associate Director at Trinity Rep (Providence, RI), where he has directed Appropriate, Clybourne Park, Crime and Punishment, Lie of the Mind and The Glass Menagerie. With director Melissa Kievman he helms an annual retreat at an old stone house in upstate New York, where they have presented epic environmental stagings of all of Chekhov’s plays.
